Living the Good Life…

Adventures of the garden patch

Revived mint

My Mint plant has finally revived, last year it was ravaged by the caterpillars to the point were there was almost nothing left, over the winter a few patches remained, since it has started to get warmer I have made sure it is is in a nice sunny spot, fed it regularly  and even took some little shoots off in case is died back. Until now I wasn’t having much luck but now its seems to have grown back all at once and since I sprayed my plants a couple of weeks ago with the caterpillar spray so far touch wood everything is getting a chance to grow back… and not a caterpillar in sight

Last wave of seeds…

These are my last batch of seedlings it’s probably a little bit late for the Alicante tomatoes but im hoping, they will catch up in the green house they seem to be growing very quickly in the windowsill, they all like the nice volume of sunshine, and the nice heat through the window. The sweetpeas are also doing really well i am thinking of just re-potting them straight into the trellis when they get a little bit bigger, so that they don’t have to experience too much root disturbance and have a chance of growing nice big roots from early on. Again the sunflowers are doing really well and are growing height fairly quickly. This time I have planted just three to a small pot and they have grown a lot quicker with the extra room to grow, i also think that they will be easier to re-plant, as their roots will not be as tangled as the last sunflower plants…

As you can see on the right is my first attempt of growing lavender from seed, the shoots only came up slowly, and then all of a sudden in the last week, they have all started dying, they have not dried out due to the sun, as the leaves are still moist, and i have made sure that the soil is not to wet, so im not sure why they are dying back. I have tried setting a second set of seeds, and hope that i will have more luck, but we will have to see how things go…

Basil plant…

My Basil plant has picked up, since i have re-potted it into a larger pot, however i have found that it does not like a lot of heat, and often needs water otherwise it starts to droop…

Mint plant

Since I re-potted my herbs into bigger pots they all seem to be doing ok, but the one which has taken the most must be unsurprisingly my mint plant. I know that they like to “take over” but since I have placed it outside  the plant has created loads of new shoots coming up from the centre and the previous shoots have been pushed out to the side to  make room for all the new ones to grow upwards. This weekend I saw combined pots from B&Q, which sold mint and strawberry plants together in a hanging basket, I feel sorry for the strawberry plants which will be coupled with them, there will be no room left at all!

Herbs

I repoted my mint, basil and chives plants today into bigger pots to allow them to grow. The basil plant was not doing very well in the pot is was in and was easily drying out and wilting even though i had not long watered it. So i am hoping now it is in some better soil with some bigger space to grow, it will do better. Originally I was going to put these three herbs in one of the wall baskets but planting mint with other plants so closely might not be such a good idea, so instead i have planted them all seperatly with the mint in its very own pot were it grow nice a big without taking over other plants!
